Degree Programs
Master’s Degree ConcentrationThrough the Metro-Urban Institute, studies can be concentrated in the urban ministries as one pursues the Master of Divinity or Master of Arts degree, equipping individuals with tools needed for involvement in the multicultural atmosphere of the inner-city and surrounding areas. Completion of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university is required for admission into the master’s programs. Graduate CertificateA Graduate Certificate in Urban Ministry may be granted to students in either the M.Div. or MA degree programs. Students seeking the Graduate Certificate in Urban Ministry must: a) attain 18 hours of course work related to urban ministry with a B or better in each course of the urban focus; b) complete two years of field placement or internship in an approved urban placement context; c) participate in urban theological reflections seminars with an urban ministry mentor for at least one year; and d) maintain a 2.5 or above overall GPA. Doctor of MinistryDesigned to equip seminary graduates with additional resources for ministry in the urban setting, this program partners pastors with a variety of professors, community-based practitioners, and agencies in a series of six five day seminars spread during 18 months. The doctoral project then gives candidates an opportunity to focus on one particular aspect of urban ministry. This program can be completed in two to three years. Linkage Degree ProgramIndividuals who have not received an undergraduate degree, but would like to complete a degree while participating in MUI Christian Leadership Certificate program can do so through the Linkage Education program through an undergraduate institution. For further information, contact the MUI Office at 412-441-3304 ext. 2163. Christian Leadership Certificate ProgramThe Christian Leadership Certificate Program is a two-year open
enrollment program designed to empower faith-based leadership from all
walks of life, regardless of past academic achievement. All that is
required for admission is a high school diploma or GED. Individuals must
complete 18 seminars and provide proof of a minimum of 180 hours of
volunteer community service. Past recipients of the MUI Christian
Leadership Certificate seeking under-graduate degrees have successfully
transferred their coursework to a variety of colleges and universities
across the country for academic credit.
TERM 1 - September 8 - November 14, 2008
BNT01 New Testament Survey I - Tuesday, 6:30-7:20 p.m. The Rev. Thelma Mitchell, Dunamis Baptist of Wilkinsburg Seminar introduces the New Testament and its major writings; attention is given to interpretation of historical and theological issues. Individuals are lead on a challenging journey that requires them to think critically and deeply about the Word of God as they dialogue with scholars, orally and in writing.
The BPR02 Mission In Context - Tuesday, 7:35-8:25 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Jermaine McKinley, MUI This seminar will explore some of the dimensions of missiology in the multi-religious and multi-cultural context of our world today and what it suggests in planning for future Christian missions global and local.
ACH13 Church History I (Early Church) - Tuesday, 8:40-9:30 p.m. The Rev. Thomas Smith, Monumental Baptist Seminar provides a comprehensive and orderly account of the history of Christianity from its beginnings using thematic and chronological approaches. Correlations are made between historical perspectives, secondary sources and scholarship recognizing and reflecting on significant events in the life of the church. Fees One-time Application Fee (non-refundable) $10.00 Single Seminar Cost $150.00 Grants are available to those who qualify. CLC students taking three seminars concurrently are eligible for a reduction in tuition. NOTE: Tuition must be paid in full before start of first class. No qualified student accepted into the program will be turned away. Enroll in the CLC Program 1.Complete the Application Form. The Metro-Urban Institute’s schedule includes three ten (10) week terms per academic year; students may be admitted at the beginning of any term (i.e., September, November, March). 2. Submit your application fee of $10 when submitting your application (it is non refundable - please use check or money order payable to Pittsburgh Theological Seminary). 3. Submit a 500 word typed personal statement that reflects a description of yourself, education and your religious background, strengths, and the reason you wish to participate in the Metro-Urban Institute Program. Schedule and complete an interview with an MUI Representative at least one month before the start of the term you plan to enter. 4. Ensure recommendation forms are received and returned by your local church/organization (pastor or supervisor), and the two other individuals identified who know you well and can attest to your abilities and character.
