Church and Society

March 15 – May 25, 2010 / Tuesdays and Thursdays / 10:00–11:15 a.m.
This course examines the corporate witness of the church in society and
society’s influence on the church’s corporate witness. The course
utilizes urban realities as points of departure, but also includes
consideration of non-urban contexts. Special attention will be given to
ethnic, class, and gender aspects of Christian public witness utilizing
Howard Thurman’s theological framework as a starting point.
Environmental Justice in the City
Taught by Dr. Ronald E. Peters
Thursday - Saturday / April 8-10, 2010
Frequently, concerns about ecological sustainability that affect the
quality of life in the city (food, soil, or water quality, fuel
consumption, infrastructure, or pollution control) receives little
attention in the poorest areas of the urban community. Yet, realities
that render these areas toxic affect all society. This interdisciplinary
course will examine the scriptural and theological basis of the ideal of
community as an ethical and spiritual value to encourage holistic
strategies that contribute to environmental well-being in the city.
